Type 2 diabetes is due to insulin resistance or is it that the pancreas is not producing enough insulin?
Hello everyone.sorry if this question looks stupid but i would like to know if type 2 diabetes is due to insulin resistance or is it that the pancreas is not producing enough insulin? Is there any blood test to know whether type 2 is due to the body not being able to use insulin properly or whether the pancreas is not producing sufficient insulin?

Type 2 is where your body doesn't make enough or sufficient insulin.
Eric Williams
From what I was told type 2 just dosnt make enough and type 1 it decided to take a poop and not make any anymore
Dave Carter
type 2 can be both insulin resistance and a faulty pancreas. type 1 is normally when the pancreas stops producing any.

Dave Carter do u have any idea about c-peptide test? Can this test help us to measure the amount of insulin level in our body? I asked my GP but he doesn't have much idea as this test is not being performed in my place.
Dave Carter
I've had many, many blood tests for many, many things. A c-peptide is useful in working out what type of diabetes you have and I'm surprised your doctor isn't in a position to do it, as it's basically just a matter of taking a blood sample and sending it to the hospital with a request for what they need testing, but I don't know how the health system works in India, so I can't really comment.

Dave Carter thanks.well i come from the north eastern part of India and medical system is not advanced here, i still remember the first time i met the endo, she asked me to do a fasting and PP blood test and as per the results, stated i have adult onset of type 2 diabetes and put me on metformin. This is what at max they did.so these diabetic support groups are really helpful for me.

I have met quite a few people who said they have both. I don't know of the scientific possibility of that being true or not. However, I am not so arrogant to think that it's genetically impossible. Type 1 and Type 2 are specific genetic markers. Some doctors change your category simply based on if you have to take insulin or not. But in terms of papers/legal definition it is incorrect. I also know that some doctors would change your category because some insurances give more benefits if your categorized as type 1. Bullshit, I know, but this is what they do.

type 2 can be any of those things

Seem there is an insulin test through blood test. To see if you have too much insulin in your blood.

Type 2 could be either insulin resistance or insulin insufficiency. There is a test, but they don't do it. I don't understand this, as how can they treat you without knowing what's wrong? Presumably the treatment for both conditions is the same (i.e. reduce your blood glucose and, if that doesn't work, pump you full of insulin)
Sanjib Kr T
Steve Thomas all the GP did was the fasting and PP blood sugar test, not even hba1c test.i was referred to an endo, she repeated the same fasting/PP test and she put me on metformin.
Steve Thomas
I didn't even get an endo. I have found out more about diabetes myself than I've ever been told. I'd consider bariatric surgery if they offered it

I was sent in for blood work as I have an annual check up and they found out I have type 2 diabetes

Im on metformin too

The technical definition is insulin resistance. However, the longer you are uncontrolled as a type two, the more than likely you can lose your ability to make your own insulin over time.

I'm not aware of any specific blood tests for type 2 yet. For now, the way doctors do it is simply test your A1C levels. Which I disagree with. Because there could be a ton of reasons why someone's hemoglobin would be high in sugar. Such as Steroids. it is wrong to immediately brand someone as type 2 for something like that. However, that's the medical culture.

If u r overweight then you maybe insulin resistant
Yogirajj Chakra
Vikas Thakur That's not true. Some overweight people have MODY.
Vikas Thakur
Yogirajj Chakra that's why I have used word 'May be' but what is this MODY..? Will you please explain in detail
Yogirajj Chakra
Vikas Thakur It is too complicated to give detailed explanation. But the short version of it is, a defect in a single gene, that are hereditary. They've identified 14 different genes classified as MODY. Different genes causes different problems, and sometimes they include complications such as kidney problems, neurological disorders, etc. Unfortunately, because people don't read, they think everyone is type2.

Yogirajj Chakra Yogirajj Chakra in my case there is no previous family history of diabetes. I have reduced my a1c from 8.6 to 5.2 and lost 15 kg weight. My fasting BS is around 75 to 80 and PP blood sugar is 120 to130 mostly. Even after eating in modra…Lihat Lainnya

Vikas Thakur yes u might be in remission.in my case my PP was around 340-370..beta cells have already been destroyed in my case...anyways i would ask doc bout c peptide test.
