My endocrinologist has ordered a blood glucose test, fasting (2 hours) and I was told that I had to eat a High Carb Diet for 3 days before the test

My endocrinologist has ordered a blood glucose test, fasting (2 hours) and I was told that I had to eat a High Carb Diet for 3 days before the test. Does anyone have any information about this? Maybe it is something new? - Trina Michelle Monley.

Blood glucose test is just a finger prick like you would on your machine at home. There isn't a good reason to adjust your diet for it except for the 2hour fast that is.

Sandi Roy
Is this a glucose tolerance test? Maybe get more info

Jody Dalton
Yes, the formal name would be Oral Glucose Tolerance Test. Google has all sorts of info on this test. Plus, you could enter 'glucose tolerance' in the group search box...

Sandi Roy
I had that many years ago but didnt have to eat more

Alice E Goodwin
See the way she typed it glucose test is just a finger prick. Now I did the tolerance test thats how I found out I was t1.5 and not t2

Sandi Roy
What they did when i had this. They would give me a bottle of glucola, very sugary sweet to drink. In 1/2 hour they would test my blood...They did this for about 3 hours and retest. It was actually for Hypoglycemia.

Jody Dalton
Alice E Goodwin But a finger prick glucose check doesn't involve eating a high carb meal beforehand, which is more indicative of the oral glucose tolerance test.

Alice E Goodwin
Jody Dalton I know but a glucose tolerance check should not involve eating high carbs either. It can be down right dangerous and if your BS is over 180 they can't even do the test.

Debi Prechtl Mitchell
Alice E Goodwin what are your symptoms of a 1.5. .

Jody Dalton
Alice E Goodwin Even so, what was described is more in line with a glucose tolerance check than just a regular finger prick.

Jody Dalton
Sandi Roy I could be wrong, but I don't know of any other situation where a person would be advised to eat high carb meals for 3 days prior to testing, as Tina says she was instructed to do...

Alice E Goodwin
Debi Prechtl Mitchell I am not sure I was diagnosed" pre diabetic" at 15 and it just ignored it till I was 30 ( wasn't hard to do never went and seen doctors.) And ended up in the hospital for gallbladder removal. Found out I had diabetes thought at the time it was type 2. After seeing a endo and several test he told me I was type 1.5.

Sandi Roy
Jody Dalton Anything could be possible. You doctor could totally explain this to you.I i wish you the best.

Jody Dalton
Sandi Roy Thank you, but I was only responding to Trina's post...lol

Amanda Allan
Jody Dalton yes, this is very common advice in any low-carb or keto group. You need to eat carbs for several days before a glucose tolerance test or the results will not be accurate.

Trina Michelle Monley
I phoned my doc. tonight and she confirmed that I have to do it that way.....bit strange looking for carb. food to eat now lol

Trina Michelle Monley
It's only been one day and I feel bloated and sluggish already.

I had a glucose tolerance test done when I was pregnant with my last child. It was a four hour test and I had to drink 2 bottles of a sick tasting orange syrup after a 12 hour fast. They did a finger prick every 15 minutes for 4 hours. Maybe this is similar to what was ordered for you. Mine was done about 30 years ago. I guess the procedure probably changed some in 30 years.

Alice E Goodwin
Not much now they have orange grape or bubble gun flavoured syrup taste just as bad tho.

When I was diagnosed with t2 4 years ago, I was sent to have a glucose tolerance test done, but they were not able to do it because my fasting blood sugar was 224 and it would have been too dangerous for me to consume more sugar. I was immediately diagnosed t2 without the glucose tolerance test.

Laurie Evans Szumla
That makes no sense to eat more carbs unless they just want to put you on meds. I ate normal before mine and was diagnosed T2D

Dwayne Robinson
If you don't eat high carb, you will automatically fail the test. This could lead to false diagnosis. The standard suggestion is to eat 100-150 grands per day for there days prior to give them a true picture of your results. It's why I've never had it done. Lol
I know what that works do to my glucose No thank you.

Hi Trina..yes in Australia it is called a Glucose Tolerance Test..some ask to have a high carb diet for 3 days prior to the test..then fast before the test..do a fasting blood test then give you a bottle of glucose to drink then each hour for 3 hrs post drink they take blood and urine..it is to see if your glucose level stays elevated after the test..(means you have diabetes) if it comes down to normal at 2hours then your not..!

I’m in Australia and had a test like this 10 years ago during my pregnancy to test for gestational diabetes... I was just under the line to say gestational diabetic. I would avoid now at all costs were I to be advised to take it. I feel the Kraft Insulin Assay is worth exploring or 24 hour CGM perhaps

Linda Galla
When I had the glucose tolerance test for gestational diabetes, they did not do a fasting test before I drank the glucose. My sugar went up to over 500 and then took a nose dive down to 55. It was done at a lab and the tech let me walk out of that office. She told me I was shaking, sweating and dizzy because I had not eaten since midnight, the night before. Thank God I had a friend drive me that day. We went across the street to get something to eat when they let me go. To this day, I dont remember walking out the door to the car or walking into the restaurant. My friend told the server that I just had a glucose tolerance test and was not feeling well at all. The server brought a glass of oj, a glass of Pepsi and crackers. She dumped 2 packs of sugar in the oj and told me to drink it. I did and after about 15-20 minutes, I felt better. When I got home, my obgyn was on the phone telling me to get to the hospital immediately. He met my husband and I there and told us he didnt know how I didnt go into a diabetic coma. I spent the next 5 days in the hospital. I cringe to this day when I hear a pregnant woman needs a glucose tolerance test.

Trina Michelle Monley
Yes Ruby... it is the test I have to do 3 days on high carb fast the night before I have blood taken drink the orange stuff wait 2 hours have more blood taken. It is to see if I am diabetic and if I need medication. Will let you all know when I find out next Wednesday

Jamie Williams
I believe it and I never ever take those. I had a pregnancy one six years ago. My three hour dropped to eighteen. Yes EIGHTEEN. They checked it three times to confirm. Never ever again. My midwife was furious and thought I was dead. How I lived I don’t know. My husband made me chug a smoothie from LJS.

Trina Michelle Monley
Hoping that I am not Ruby Tuesday. I have good health, lots of energy, no medical problems at all, still exercise and do all my housework etc. I am just 20 kgs. overweight....since I lived in the States for 3 months a few years back, never got the weight off when I came back home.

Ruby Tuesday
Hey Trina..hoping your not either..I wish I knew about this LCHF woe many years ago..I'm sure my life would have been very different..luckily my daughters are benefiting from this woe..and my husband is too..goodluck

Trina Michelle Monley
Never too late! I had a naturopath who put me on the same eating plan about 20 years ago, when I lost 7 kgs. at the time. I don't know where she heard about it but she was way ahead of her time.

Ruby Tuesday
Ni its not..I have been doing this 8wks now and off all meds and inj. except metformin, which I am happy to be on for its benefits, specially because of me being very insulin resistance..my sugars are so good too..and can't wait to see what my HbA1c is in another month..!

Sandy Bahr
If a person has been eating a LCHF Ketogenic diet and the doctor is aware how it works he will instruct the patient to eat 100 carbs a day for 3-5 days prior to the GTT. The reason for this is that by eating a low carb diet your insulin levels have gone down (a good thing) but you will not pass the GTT because of it. The increase in carbs stimulates the pancreas to begin to increase insulin to try to match the new carb load. This takes 3-4 days. I don't know why any doctor would give a diabetic a glucose tolerance test since the patient is obviously already been diagnosed. If you have not been diagnosed with diabetes I still think it is a bad test to do.

Robin Scobee Cross
I have heard yes, you have tips carb load.

I would say no. But I'm kind of a brat. I would tell them I want an a1c and a meter to monitor fasting blood sugar. But I was an enormous brat about my glucose tests in pregnancy. I was so sick from the load of glucose I puked during the first one and had yo have someone else drive me yo the second one (second kid) bc I got so dizzy from the sugar. And this was WAY before keto.

Maura McBride McKay
I'm with you, I'd tell the doc no way! I had one with my second baby. I felt super sick and lightheaded so I asked to lie down for the blood draw and they just said "oh, you'll be fine". I was not fine! I passed out during the second blood draw, and they acted all shocked about it (I told those @#$!), sent me home without completing the test and told me to COME BACK LATER. Ummm, NO. I'm never coming back. You're gonna need a court order to get me to take a glucose tolerance test again.

Jamie Williams
They want to see what it is for a normal diet or if you carb load. Their line of thinking is that a non diabetic should be able to absorb and process extreme amounts of carbs. Eat the way you always eat. Don’t carb load. There is absolutely no reason to do it and why in the world would you put your body through that.

Tim Hodge
Maybe they think you'll be running a marathon to make the appointment? Only reason can see to load carbs!
